Initial site preparation for the Container Barn.

Rather than the typical petroleum-based foam used for slab insulation, we used a product called Glavel, which is made from recycled glass that is aerated and made almost into a lava rock. It is a super lightweight gravel replacement that has the same R-value as conventional foam, but a far smaller carbon footprint

  • We put 10 inches of the Glavel underneath the slab and compacted it to create slab insulation.

  • To prevent water intrusion, the slabs were constructed with Hycrete sustainable concrete; first ever “Cradle to Cradle” certified building material

  • The entire slab is piped for radiant heat. When this system is active, warm water runs in a loop through piping just under the surface of the concrete to help keep the space warm in winter time.
