Slab

Rather than the typical petroleum based foam used for slab insulation, we used a product called Glavel: recycled glass that is aerated and made almost into a lava rock. It is a super lightweight, super high insulatory gravel replacement that has the same R-value as conventional foam, but a far smaller carbon footprint 

• We put 10 inches of the Glavel underneath the slab and compacted it to create slab insulation.

• To prevent water intrusion, the slabs were constructed with Hycrete sustainable concrete; first ever “Cradle to Cradle” certified building material

• The entire slab is piped with radiant heat: A warm water loop of piping that runs just under the surface of the concrete will help keep the space warm in winter time.
