Initial site preparation for the Container Barn.
Rather than the typical petroleum-based foam used for slab insulation, we used a product called Glavel, which is made from recycled glass that is aerated and made almost into a lava rock. It is a super lightweight gravel replacement that has the same R-value as conventional foam, but a far smaller carbon footprint
We put 10 inches of the Glavel underneath the slab and compacted it to create slab insulation.
To prevent water intrusion, the slabs were constructed with Hycrete sustainable concrete; first ever “Cradle to Cradle” certified building material
The entire slab is piped for radiant heat. When this system is active, warm water runs in a loop through piping just under the surface of the concrete to help keep the space warm in winter time.
