Job Title: Program Intern
Begins/Ends: September 2026/December 2026
We are a working farm and food systems educational center that focuses on building community resilience through sustainable food and climate practices. We host educational programming for youth across Wake County, focused on local food systems, natural resource conservation, and sustainable agriculture.
Internship Summary
The Program Intern will support staff on the programming team and assist with educational and special events, communications support, research projects, and volunteer engagement. This intern will get to experience a wide variety of functions within our operation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Educational Programming Support
Set up and break down field trip events at the farm focused on environmental sustainability, local food systems, nutrition and health
Support tours with students and lead workshop breakouts
Help maintain administrative and inventory supplies for educational programming
Assist in preparing snacks for visitors using farm ingredients
Other duties as assigned
Volunteer and Outreach
Represent the farm at community outreach and tabling events
Support the planning, set up and break down of volunteer shifts and special events
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Skills Required:
High school diploma or GED
Proficiency in Google Suite
Strong organizational skills and excellent communication skills (oral, written, and visual)
Eager to learn with strong attention to detail
Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel and lift up to 25 pounds in outdoor agricultural settings with varying weather conditions
Strong interpersonal skills for working with students, teachers, volunteers, and corporate groups
Excited about Burkett Farm’s focus on sustainable food systems and education.
Interns must have
Reliable transportation to get to our farm location in Cary (1800 Westhaven Dr.) and other off-site locations
Schedule/Location:
This internship will be 200 hours (approximately 12 hours a week); must be available for on-site shifts every Wednesday and Friday from 8am to noon, plus others as scheduled.
Compensation:
Intern will be eligible for a stipend of $3,000 upon completion of internship.
