Greenhouse

This large, south facing, glass-enclosed structure is a dedicated greenhouse for seed-starting.

  • The window and glass system for the greenhouse is by Hopes, who has manufactured windows in Jamestown, NY since 1912

  • Operable windows and a shading system allow for passive cooling in the summer.  There are also fans for mechanical cooling if needed.

  • The southern orientation allows the greenhouse to be passively heated in the winter

  • The greenhouse slab is piped with radiant heat piping: solar thermal collectors heat water for circulation just under the surface of the concrete to help keep the space warm in winter time.

  • The space will feature two rows of seedling shelves on either side of the space, which will also be heated with solar thermal radiant heat.

  • Using radiant heat keeps the power consumption down.

  • The wood trusses for the greenhouse structure are constructed of sustainably harvested Black Locust wood and galvanized steel.  Trusses were provided by Whole Trees.
